"Restoring the American Chestnut"
Presentation by Bruce Levine, President of the Maryland Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation

Fountain Rock Nature Center
8511 Nature Center Place
Walkersville, MD 21793

The American chestnut tree was once a familiar sight in the eastern U.S. woods. Folk legend once said a squirrel could travel from Maine to Florida on the branches of chestnuts without touching the ground. Then in the early 20th century, an invasive fungus was accidentally introduced from Asia. The fungus, commonly called the chestnut blight, virtually wiped out nearly the entire population of chestnut trees, some 4 million stems. With the trees was lost one of the most ecologically significant sources of food for birds, wildlife, and even domestic livestock.

Join us Sunday, October 12th for a presentation from Bruce Levine, president of the Maryland Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, as he discusses the history of the chestnut and the foundation's effort to save the species through a local backcross breeding program. Learn how the American chestnut is making a comeback right here in Frederick County.
